Often times it seems like the life of a photographer is glamorous. After all, we meet new people all the time, love what we do and sometimes, we get to travel to amazing places.
If you’re thinking about venturing out on your own, here’s a FANTASTIC article about the pros & cons of having your own photography biz.
Photojojo has done a swell job cutting swiftly to the heart of the matter giving a great quick overview to help you decide if it’s something you really want to pursue.
I’ll be honest, being a photographer is often 10% photography and 90% business. So if you don’t relish the idea of running a business, this gig might not be for you. I frequently work 16 hour days, 6 or 7 days a week. Based on that, I spend 9-10 hours shooting for every 100 hours of work. And that’s reality.
I’m not going to go into depth on this one, but the other part of this is that during the 90% business time, you wear so many hats–and some that don’t quite fit. From marketing and sales to product innovation and customer service, you’re in charge of it all. And if you’re a one man show, it’s all you, all the time. Just some food for thought!
